Incident Overview

New Delhi, Mar 9: A woman from Manipur and her third-gender companion from Assam were reportedly attacked after they confronted a group of men who were harassing them near a park adjacent to the Saket District Court in Delhi on Sunday evening.

As per initial reports, the two individuals were enjoying a walk in the park when they were subjected to inappropriate comments from a group of men.

According to police, the situation escalated when one of the victims voiced her disapproval of the remarks. "An argument ensued after one of the women objected, leading to the accused allegedly assaulting her," stated a police officer.

The woman suffered minor injuries and was subsequently taken to Safdarjung Hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Law enforcement arrived at the scene shortly after being notified and reached out to the victim. "Our teams are in regular contact with her, and further actions will be determined based on her account," the officer added.

Sources indicate that efforts are ongoing to identify and locate the assailants, and that the victims have experienced similar verbal harassment in the area previously.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, particularly from leaders in the Northeast region.

Meghalaya's Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma, expressed his outrage over the ongoing violence against individuals from the region and called for decisive action from authorities.

In a post on social media, tagging Delhi's Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Sangma stated, "I am appalled by the continuous attacks on Northeastern individuals in mainland India. The physical assault on our people from Manipur and Assam near Saket Court, Delhi is abhorrent. Racial bullying must not become the norm, and we must respond vigorously. I urge the authorities to take strict measures."

The incident is part of a troubling trend, as there have been multiple reports of racial discrimination against individuals from the Northeast in various parts of the country. In February, Delhi Police apprehended a couple after three women from Arunachal Pradesh filed a complaint alleging racial harassment and threats.

The couple, identified as Ruby Jain and her husband Harsh Jain, were taken into custody following an investigation into the FIR lodged at Malviya Nagar Police Station.
