Assault on West Bengal Youth in Silchar Sparks Outrage

Silchar, Dec 29: A young man from Murshidabad district in West Bengal was reportedly attacked in Silchar on Sunday after being mistakenly identified as a Bangladeshi national, prompting police intervention and strong reactions from local civic organizations.
Details of the Assault
As per police reports and the victim's complaint, the incident took place around 7 am at the intersection of Hospital Road and Radha Madhav Road.
The victim, Rinku Saikh, was in Silchar for business purposes when he was confronted by a group of individuals who questioned his nationality.
Despite having valid Indian identification, Saikh claimed he was not permitted to show his documents.
In his report filed at Rangirkhari Police Station, he recounted being forced to kneel on the ground, subjected to verbal abuse, and physically attacked after being labeled a 'Bangladeshi.' He also mentioned that he was not allowed to leave the area.
Saikh stated, 'I was forced to kneel on the road, verbally abused, and physically assaulted after being labeled a Bangladeshi. I was also not allowed to leave. A local businessman who knew me intervened and rescued me by defusing the situation.'
Police Response and Community Reaction
Cachar Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das confirmed that a case has been filed regarding the incident.
'An investigation has been launched to identify and apprehend those responsible for the assault,' he stated.
The incident has drawn significant backlash from various social and civic groups, whose representatives visited the police station to meet with senior officials and demand stringent legal action against the assailants.
They condemned the attack as unlawful and cautioned against taking the law into one's own hands based on mere suspicion.
Police officials assured that the matter is being treated with utmost seriousness and that appropriate measures will be taken against those found culpable.
