Assam's Transformation: Defence Minister Highlights Growth and Security Progress

A New Era for Assam

Tezpur, March 31: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized the significant advancements in security and development in Assam, stating that the state has experienced a "remarkable transformation" from its troubled past of insurgency to becoming a pivotal growth engine in the Northeast.

While campaigning for BJP candidate Prithiraj Rava in the Tezpur Assembly constituency, Singh drew upon his national security experience to highlight the reduction in militancy and the positive effects of government initiatives in the area.

Reflecting on historical challenges, he noted that from 2001 to 2015, Assam faced severe violence from various militant groups, with an alarming average of 313 incidents each year.

“Once, Assam was synonymous with militancy, conflict, and poverty. Today, these issues are no longer prevalent,” Singh remarked.

He attributed the improved security landscape to the BJP government's strategic policies and political determination.

“Under the BJP administration, over 7,500 militants have laid down their arms, demonstrating the effectiveness of sound policies and strong leadership,” he stated, acknowledging the efforts of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the central government.

Singh asserted that the "double engine" government has propelled Assam's development across various sectors.

“It is fair to say that Assam has emerged as the development engine for the entire Northeast,” he declared.

On the economic front, the Defence Minister reported substantial growth over the last decade.

“Assam's economy has nearly tripled in size compared to a decade ago. From 2020 to 2025, the growth rate has been approximately 45%, as per the Reserve Bank of India,” he noted.

He expressed optimism about the state's future goals, stating, “Assam aims to achieve a $150 billion economy by 2030, and I am confident this target will be met.”

Singh highlighted advancements in various sectors, including healthcare, infrastructure, and connectivity.

“Previously, Assam had only six medical colleges. Now, there are 14, with an additional 10 planned. The health budget has surged from around Rs 4,000 crore during the Congress era to nearly Rs 9,000 crore today,” he explained.

He also pointed out enhancements in air travel. “Before 2014, Assam had merely seven air routes. Currently, about 30 routes are operational, significantly improving connectivity with the rest of the country,” Singh added.

In a critique of the Congress party, Singh accused past administrations of neglecting Assam and the Northeast.

“The Congress party distanced Assam from Delhi, overlooking the region's aspirations and potential,” he claimed.

Contrasting their approach to border development, Singh remarked, “While Congress viewed border villages as the last villages of India, we see them as the first villages of the nation.”

He also underscored the Centre's ongoing commitment under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Prime Minister Modi has prioritized the Northeast, visiting Assam around 30 times in the last 11 years,” he stated.

With elections approaching, Singh expressed confidence in the electorate's decision.

“Given the enthusiasm of the people, no force can prevent the BJP-led NDA from securing another term in government,” he asserted.
