Assam's Strategic Measures for Flood Management and Erosion Control
Significant Developments in Flood Management
Guwahati, Feb 24: Given that more than 40% of Assam is prone to flooding, effective flood management is crucial.
The Water Resources department has made notable advancements in managing flood risks, addressing erosion, and enhancing water resource development since May 2021.
Efforts have been concentrated on building resilience through the development of infrastructure, the adoption of new technologies, and supportive policies.
According to sources from the Water Resources department, approximately 1,000 km of new embankments have either been constructed or are currently being built throughout the state, with around 540 km of existing embankments being raised and reinforced.
In response to severe erosion affecting various regions, 280 anti-erosion projects covering 320 km have been finalized, alongside the construction of 43 sluice gates. Over the past five years, a total of 862 projects have been initiated at an estimated cost of ₹28,117 crore.
Last year, Assam experienced minimal flooding due to reduced rainfall, and the Water Resources department is optimistic that the newly implemented schemes will effectively manage potential floods this year.
Additionally, Embankment Monitoring Committees, which include district officials and local residents, have been established in flood-prone regions to ensure proper maintenance of the embankments.
A Hydro-Informatics Unit has been set up for flood forecasting, modeling, and real-time monitoring, while an Integrated Process Management System is being developed to digitize workflows.
