Bamboo Bicycles Set to Transform Guwahati's Parks

Guwahati: On Friday, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the immense potential of bamboo as a valuable industrial and economic asset. He announced that a newly designed bamboo bicycle will soon be available for public use in parks throughout Guwahati, allowing residents to test it and provide feedback prior to its official launch.

CM Sarma shared his experience of riding the bamboo bicycle, which is entirely constructed from bamboo and has received certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

In a social media update, he stated, “Curious about my ride? It’s a Bamboo Bicycle, crafted entirely from bamboo and certified by BIS.”

The Chief Minister revealed plans to place these bicycles in various parks in Guwahati, enabling the public to ride them and share their thoughts on the product before it hits the market.

This initiative is part of a larger strategy to showcase the potential of Assam's indigenous bamboo resources and promote its use across different industries.

CM Sarma noted, “Bamboo, which is native to Assam, has over 800 byproducts and can be utilized in various applications, from methanol to aviation fuel and reinforced structures.”

He also acknowledged a significant policy shift by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration that reclassified bamboo as grass, which has opened new avenues for the sector.

According to the Chief Minister, this regulatory change has expanded opportunities for bamboo cultivation, processing, and industrial use. Assam, rich in bamboo resources, aims to foster bamboo-based industries and products to create job opportunities and enhance the value of its natural resources.

The bamboo bicycle project is being promoted as a prime example of how traditional, locally sourced materials can be transformed into contemporary consumer goods.

The public feedback initiative in Guwahati's parks is anticipated to gather insights on the bicycle's design, functionality, and overall performance before its broader release.

This initiative aligns with the growing focus on sustainable and locally sourced alternatives in manufacturing and infrastructure, with bamboo being explored for various applications, including mobility products, construction materials, and industrial feedstock.
