Assam's Draft Electoral Roll Released Ahead of Upcoming Assembly Elections
Draft Electoral Roll Unveiled
Guwahati, Dec 28: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has published the draft electoral roll for Assam following the Special Revision (SR), revealing that 4,78,992 deceased voters will be removed from the list. Additionally, 5,23,680 voters have been identified as having changed their registered addresses.
This draft electoral roll is particularly important as it precedes the Assembly elections scheduled for early next year. Unlike other states preparing for elections, Assam did not undergo a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) due to the ongoing National Register of Citizens (NRC) update.
Furthermore, 53,619 entries have been marked as demographically similar, indicating multiple registrations that need correction. The release of this draft also initiates the claims and objections period, which will last until January 22, 2026, with the final electoral roll set to be published on February 10, 2026.
The draft lists a total of 2,52,02,775 electors. However, after excluding 'D' voters, the verified count stands at 2,51,09,754.
As of now, the total number of electors is 2,52,01,624, comprising 1,25,72,583 males, 1,26,28,662 females, and 379 categorized as 'others.'
According to the Chief Electoral Office of Assam, the Election Commission has completed the House-to-House (H2H) verification phase for SR-2026, which covered 61,03,103 households.
This initiative aims to create an inclusive, accurate, and transparent electoral roll for the state.
“In Assam, the current Special Revision (SR) cycle focuses on enhancing the integrity of the electoral roll in preparation for the 2026 Assembly elections,” the statement noted.
“The purification drive is designed to ensure an error-free electoral roll by allowing eligible voters to register, correcting clerical mistakes in names, ages, and addresses, removing deceased individuals, updating addresses, and eliminating multiple registrations for the same voter across different polling stations or constituencies,” the statement added.
Currently, Assam has 31,486 polling stations.
