Guwahati, Nov 5: A significant two-day conclave aimed at enhancing Assam's dairy, livestock, and cooperative sectors wrapped up on Wednesday at Raj Bhavan, marking a pivotal move towards promoting rural entrepreneurship and sustainable development.


The event, initiated by Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, gathered a diverse group of experts, policymakers, academics, and industry professionals to share insights and explore innovative approaches for advancing these sectors, according to an official statement.


The second day included thematic discussions and a keynote address focusing on the advancement of dairy technology, improved livestock management, and sustainable poultry production.


Participants emphasized the critical need to modernize dairy infrastructure, adopt technology-driven practices, and bolster the start-up ecosystem to create new opportunities for rural youth and women entrepreneurs.


Speakers also pointed out the essential role of financial institutions like NABARD and MSME in supporting sustainable dairy enterprises and fostering long-term growth in Assam's rural economy.


Jayanta Kumar Goswami, the director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary in Assam, delivered a key lecture on the 'Status of Livestock Sector in Assam,' outlining the current landscape, challenges, and emerging opportunities within the sector.


He noted that livestock and related activities are crucial for improving rural livelihoods, ensuring nutritional security, and empowering women, especially among smallholder and marginal farmers.


Discussions highlighted the importance of bio-security measures and hygienic meat processing systems to promote safe and viable piggery ventures in the state.


The potential of the piggery sector as a significant contributor to rural income and nutrition security was strongly advocated.


Experts stressed the necessity of implementing scientific breeding and sustainable fodder systems to enhance the productivity of goat and sheep farming in rural regions.


The poultry development session addressed various aspects of backyard and commercial poultry farming, including feed efficiency, hatchery management, and bio-security.


It also underscored the need to strengthen local poultry breeds, improve market connections, and expand cold chain infrastructure to ensure profitability and sustainability in the sector.
