Assam's Demolition Drive Targets Bengali-Origin Muslim Families

The government of Assam has initiated a demolition campaign affecting 667 families, predominantly of Bengali-origin Muslims, in the Goalpara district. On Monday, authorities demolished 45% of the targeted homes, with plans to continue the operation on Tuesday.

According to the district administration, notices were issued to residents in 2023 and 2024 to vacate the land. Goalpara District Commissioner Khanindra Choudhury stated that since the families did not comply, they were instructed to clear the area by Monday. Many affected residents have requested assistance for rehabilitation.

Evictions Under BJP Rule in Assam

Since the Bharatiya Janata Party assumed power in Assam in 2016, over 10,620 families, mostly Muslims, have been displaced from government land, as reported by the state revenue and disaster management department in August.

Indian Students Relocated Amid Iran-Israel Tensions

In light of escalating military tensions between Iran and Israel, some Indian students are being relocated to safer areas within Iran, as confirmed by New Delhi on Monday. The Ministry of External Affairs is actively monitoring the security situation from its embassy in Tehran.

This development follows Israel's recent airstrikes targeting what it claims are nuclear facilities in Iran, aiming to hinder Tehran's nuclear ambitions. Israel has asserted that Iran is nearing the capability to develop a nuclear weapon, prompting its military actions to protect its citizens.

Escalating Conflict and Casualties

Iran retaliated with missile strikes on various locations in Israel, including major cities like Tel Aviv and Haifa. Israel has continued its military operations against Iran for three consecutive days, raising concerns about a broader conflict. Reports indicate that 224 individuals have died in Iran, while Israel has recorded 14 fatalities.

Identities Confirmed in Air India Plane Crash

The identities of 87 victims from the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12 have been confirmed through DNA testing. So far, the remains of 57 individuals have been returned to their families.

Among the deceased was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, whose body was also handed over to his family on Monday. Rupani was one of the 242 passengers aboard the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which tragically crashed just 33 seconds after takeoff while en route to London’s Gatwick airport.
