Guwahati, June 1: On Monday, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma engaged in talks with Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, focusing on enhancing the sports infrastructure within the state. This initiative is part of Assam's ambition to become a prominent sports hub.
The meeting took place at Mandaviya's residence in New Delhi and lasted over an hour, addressing not only sports infrastructure but also the welfare of workers in Assam.
In a social media update, Sarma highlighted that their discussions aimed at expanding sports facilities statewide and fostering a supportive environment for laborers.
He expressed gratitude towards Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya for dedicating time on his birthday to discuss vital issues concerning sports development and worker welfare in Assam.
This meeting is particularly important as the Northeast prepares to host the 39th National Games in 2027, with Meghalaya as the main host. There are ongoing discussions about involving other Northeastern states in hosting various sports events, marking a potential first for regional collaboration in Indian sports.
The proposal gained traction after Mandaviya's recent visit to Shillong, where he assessed Meghalaya's readiness for the National Games.
Previously, in May 2025, the then Meghalaya Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri mentioned that the Centre had suggested that each Northeastern state should host at least one sporting event to encourage regional participation.
Committees are being formed to allocate events among the states, and this collaborative approach has received support from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who praised the initiative during the closing ceremony of the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand.
In recent years, Assam has significantly boosted its investments in sports infrastructure and athlete training as part of its long-term vision to become a national sports destination.
On May 27, 2025, while inspecting the construction of a 20,000-seat international cricket stadium in Amingaon, Sarma emphasized the necessity of developing top-notch facilities in the state.
"We aim to have a stadium that meets international standards, ensuring that we are prepared for the National Games in 2027," the Chief Minister stated.
As preparations for the 2027 National Games intensify across the region, Monday's discussions are seen as a crucial step in Assam's efforts to enhance its sports ecosystem and play a significant role in the evolving sports landscape of the Northeast.
