Hiraeth: A Tale of Struggle and Aspiration

Hiraeth is a story about ordinary people who leave behind their familiar world in search of a better future

The Assamese feature film Hiraeth, directed by Chow Partha Borgohain, has been chosen for the NETPAC Section at the Asian Film Festival Barcelona 2026.

As part of the festival's lineup, Hiraeth was showcased on Beteve, a local television channel in Barcelona, on October 21. The festival, organized by Casa Asia, is celebrating its 14th edition from October 22 to November 1.

The narrative of Hiraeth centers on Pori and her husband, Kom, who move to the city in search of a better life. However, they face numerous challenges, including exploitation and injustice, as they navigate their new surroundings. The film delves into themes of aspiration, displacement, and the disparities experienced by those whose labor fuels the wealth of the privileged.

Borgohain remarked, "Hiraeth tells the story of everyday individuals who abandon their known world in pursuit of a brighter future, only to confront harsh social realities."

He expressed that the film's inclusion in the NETPAC Section and its television broadcast would help it reach a wider audience beyond traditional festival viewers.

This selection also highlights an Assamese narrative on an international stage, allowing Barcelona audiences to connect with cinema from Assam.

The film features notable performances by Meghali Kalita, Ashim Kumar Sharma, and Atanu Mahanta, alongside a talented supporting cast including Dipankar Sharma, Archana Bezbaruah, and others. Produced by Sengpem Borgohain, with Subhitya Borgohain and Krishnangee Baruah serving as executive producers, Borgohain also took charge of cinematography. The production design was handled by Jayanta Gogoi, while Kavin Adithya edited the film. Music was composed by AT Ram, and Nabapan Deka worked on sound design.
