Assam Women’s University Moves to New Campus, Boosting Women's Education in Northeast
New Campus Inauguration Marks a Milestone
Jorhat, Feb 25: Assam Women’s University has officially relocated to its permanent campus located at Kaliyapani in Teok, Jorhat district, marking a significant advancement for women's higher education in the Northeast, over ten years after its inception.
The new facility, which spans 58 bighas of land and cost approximately Rs 29 crore, was inaugurated by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday.
During the inauguration, the Chief Minister referred to the event as a “historic” moment and pledged ongoing government support for the university's growth.
“We have inaugurated the women’s university today, and in the future, the state government will allocate additional funds for its development, aiming to transform it into a prominent educational center,” Sarma stated.
Established following the passage of a Bill in the Assam Legislative Assembly on July 15, 2013, Assam Women’s University is the first of its kind in the Northeast.
The university was officially inaugurated on September 11, 2014, under the leadership of then Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
Initially, the university operated from the Assam Agricultural University premises.
On September 12, 2019, Prof. (Dr.) Malini Goswami was appointed as the inaugural Vice-Chancellor by then Governor Jagdish Mukhi.
Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, present at the inauguration, remarked that despite its establishment in 2013, the university had been “neglected and overlooked.”
“Today, we are inaugurating the new building of Assam Women’s University, a significant institution in the state, following the inauguration of new buildings at Rabindranath Tagore University, Madhavdev University, and Bhattadev University. Although founded in 2013, it has largely been overlooked for the past decade. The construction of the new campus has been ongoing for the last five years,” Pegu noted.
Local MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi expressed pride in the completion of the permanent campus, emphasizing its importance for Jorhat, Assam, and the entire Northeast, stating that the university would significantly contribute to women's education and empowerment in the region.
Currently, the university comprises 17 departments offering 46 academic programs. It is actively implementing various skill development initiatives and has adopted the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The institution has also achieved NAAC accreditation, enhancing its academic standing.
The new campus is equipped with modern classrooms, advanced teaching-learning facilities, and dedicated offices for faculty and department heads. A girls’ hostel is also under construction and is expected to be completed shortly.
At present, the university has an enrollment of 1,205 students.
