Assam Sees Significant Drop in Secondary School Dropout Rates
Positive Trends in Assam's Education Sector
Guwahati, Jan 13: Recent statistics released by the Assam government indicate a remarkable 42% reduction in secondary school dropout rates over the past decade.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced these encouraging figures via a social media platform, highlighting that school enrollment in Assam has reached unprecedented levels.
“Our efforts extend beyond mere infrastructure; we are enhancing educational capacity significantly. Over the last ten years, the number of secondary school dropouts has decreased by 42%, with more students attending school than ever before,” Sarma stated.
He characterized this achievement as a significant result of the government's educational initiatives, reaffirming the commitment to further reduce dropout rates.
“This is a substantial victory for our educational strategies, but we will strive until we achieve zero dropouts in Assam,” he remarked.
Education department officials noted that the decline in dropout rates can be attributed to various policy initiatives, such as the enhancement of school facilities, recruitment of teachers, digital programs, scholarships, mid-day meal provisions, free textbooks and uniforms, and rigorous monitoring of student attendance, especially at the secondary level.
They also mentioned that targeted programs for girls, children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and marginalized communities have played a crucial role in improving retention rates.
Experts in education emphasized that maintaining a strong focus on teaching quality, providing counseling, promoting skill-based learning, and engaging with the community will be vital to achieving the government's objective of zero dropouts.
Officials confirmed that the government plans to continue enhancing educational reforms, with additional investments earmarked for school infrastructure, teacher training, and student support systems to ensure that every child completes their secondary education.
