Assam Sees Over 2 Lakh Crimes Against Women in Last Decade

In Assam, over 2.04 lakh cases of crimes against women have been reported in the last decade, according to the State Government. Overview of Crime Statistics in Assam

Guwahati, July 7: In the last ten years, Assam has recorded over 2.04 lakh incidents of crimes against women, as reported by the State Government to the Assam Legislative Assembly.


During a session, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who also oversees the Home and Political Department, responded to Congress MLA Wazed Ali Choudhury's inquiry, revealing that a total of 2,04,134 cases were documented during this timeframe.


The statistics presented in the assembly include alarming figures: 2,677 murders, 14,456 rapes, 1,463 dowry harassment cases, and 1,85,538 other offenses against women.


Despite these figures, the Chief Minister noted a decline in such incidents in recent years.


For instance, the number of crimes against women was 20,869 in 2016, increasing to 30,025 in 2019, but dropping to 12,070 in 2023 and further to 10,546 in 2024. As of June 26, 2026, there have been 1,344 reported cases.


Since the current government assumed office in May, there have been 46 murder cases and 110 rapes categorized under crimes against women, according to Sarma.


In response to another question from Congress MLA Baby Begum, the Chief Minister outlined various initiatives aimed at reducing crimes against women. These include establishing women help desks in every district, promoting public awareness through police stations and Village Defense Parties (VDPs), particularly in border areas, and forming women's cells in all police stations.


Addressing child marriage, Sarma noted that the government's crackdown has shown positive results. The number of registered child marriage cases rose from 23 in 2016 to a staggering 5,267 in 2023, before decreasing to 56 in 2026 (up to May 31).


From 2016 to May 31, 2026, a total of 9,68,938 cases of various types have been filed in Assam's police stations, with chargesheets submitted in 5,20,782 cases.


Additionally, the Chief Minister informed that over 3.78 lakh crime incidents were reported in the state between January 1, 2021, and June 30, 2026. This includes 54,494 thefts, 526 dacoities, 5,455 murders, 482 group attacks, and 15,656 cases of cheating and fraud, among others.


In total, 3,78,483 cases have been registered for these incidents, with police filing chargesheets in 2,54,538 cases. Furthermore, 4,26,502 individuals have been arrested, and 29,164 have faced legal consequences.
