Assam Schools Adjust Timings and Close Amid Cold Wave
School Closures and Timings Adjustments in Assam
Guwahati/Haflong, Jan 7: Due to ongoing cold wave conditions, various district authorities in Assam have decided to close schools and modify their operating hours to ensure the safety and health of students.
In the Kamrup (Metropolitan) district, the new school timings will be implemented from January 7 to January 13, 2026.
According to the new schedule, primary schools will operate from 10 am to 1:30 pm, upper primary schools from 10 am to 2 pm, and secondary and senior secondary schools from 10 am to 2:30 pm.
All educational institutions are required to adhere strictly to this directive, with the administration warning that any non-compliance will be taken seriously. This measure is aimed at ensuring public safety and the welfare of students.
In Dima Hasao district, the education department has mandated the temporary closure of all schools from January 8 to January 17. This order, issued by the Office of the Additional Director of Education (Hills), applies to all government, provincialised, and private schools from lower primary to secondary levels.
In Dhubri district, the Inspector of Schools has ordered the closure of all government and provincialised schools from January 7 to January 10, 2026. However, schools currently conducting examinations are exempt from this closure.
Meanwhile, in Hojai district, the state government has chosen to revise school timings rather than implement a complete shutdown. Following the District Commissioner's recommendation, the Office of the Inspector of Schools announced on January 6 that the new timings would take effect from January 7.
Under the revised schedule, primary and middle schools will run from 10 am to 1 pm, while secondary and senior secondary schools will operate from 10 am to 2 pm. The order also confirmed that ongoing Class X and Higher Secondary examinations will proceed as planned.
These actions are part of the authorities' response to severe winter conditions that have impacted daily life and raised concerns regarding the well-being of students.
