Preparations for Assembly Elections in Assam

Guwahati, March 22: As the single-phase Assembly elections approach, the Assam Police are gearing up to implement a series of preventive measures aimed at ensuring a smooth polling process across the state.

Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Akhilesh Singh stated that they are finalizing a list of known criminals and will take necessary actions as the election date nears to mitigate any potential disruptions.

“All police stations have been instructed to compile their lists and take appropriate action. We are continuously monitoring the situation,” he mentioned.

Singh also revealed that approximately 800 companies of Central paramilitary forces will be deployed during the elections, along with five companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and 18 units of state armed police from various regions.

This deployment aligns with the specific requirements requested by the State from the Central government, with 200 of the 800 companies already stationed in Assam.

Singh expressed confidence in the law and order situation in Assam, stating it is “in good shape” and assured that the police will do everything possible to facilitate fair and peaceful elections.

He highlighted that sufficient manpower will be available, supported by the recent establishment of five new battalions of Assam Police and the filling of numerous vacancies.

Singh further noted that the overall law and order scenario in the state has significantly improved over the years.

“The Armed Forces Special Powers Act is currently applicable in only three districts, which reflects the enhanced stability,” he added.

In the meantime, the Assam Police headquarters has been assessing election readiness in various districts, including Guwahati, and has held discussions with senior officials from the paramilitary forces.
