Assam Police Investigates Congress Leader Amid Passport Fraud Allegations
Police Action Following Allegations
On Tuesday, Assam police visited the residence of Congress leader Pawan Khera in Delhi. This visit occurred just a day after an FIR was filed by Riniki Bhuyan, the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing Khera of passport fraud. During this operation, the Delhi police assisted the Assam police team in the Nizamuddin area.
Previously, Sarma claimed that the Congress party fabricated allegations regarding his wife's multiple passports and properties in Dubai, based on false information from a Pakistani social media group. He further alleged that Pakistan is attempting to influence the election results in Assam.
Allegations of Property and Companies
Congress leaders Pawan Khera and Gaurav Gogoi accused Sarma's wife and family of owning properties in Dubai and companies in Wyoming, USA, or being involved with shell companies. In response, Sarma stated at a press conference that these accusations were made to sway the election results, which is punishable under the law. He also asserted that the documents used by Congress against his wife were sourced from a social media group named 'Pakistanis in Ajman' and that her image was manipulated onto a lost passport belonging to a Pakistani individual.
Sarma's Strong Denial
Sarma firmly rejected the allegations, labeling them as baseless and rooted in fabricated documents, aimed at tarnishing the electoral atmosphere in the state. He expressed concern that the Congress party may have received assistance from Pakistan, emphasizing that this is not merely a case of fraud but a crime against the nation. The Chief Minister claimed that the involvement of Pakistan has become evident and that law enforcement agencies will consider this during their investigations. He noted that there were at least 11 talk shows on television in Pakistan suggesting that the Congress party should win the elections. Additionally, Sarma mentioned that his wife has filed a complaint against Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera.
