Assam Police Camp Attacked: DGP Reviews Security Measures

DGP Visits Attack Site

Margherita, Mar 23: On Monday, Harmeet Singh, the Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam, visited the commando camp located at 10 Mile in Jagun. This visit followed an attack by suspected militants from the banned group United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) that occurred the previous day.

During his inspection, Singh assessed the security conditions at the camp in light of the recent assault.

Later that day, he was scheduled to meet with district police officials at the Tinsukia district headquarters.

Singh assured the media, stating, “We will take necessary legal actions. Those responsible should consider who truly benefits from such violent acts.”

The attack, which took place late on Sunday, involved the launch of four to five rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) targeting the camp, resulting in injuries to four commandos.

ULFA-I later claimed responsibility for this assault.

DGP Singh reported that three of the injured personnel suffered splinter wounds and are currently receiving treatment, with surgeries planned once the swelling decreases.

Additionally, one commando sustained burn injuries from the RPG explosion and has been transferred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for specialized treatment.

Singh mentioned that he had visited the injured personnel on Sunday to check on their condition.

In a coordinated effort, Red Shield Sappers and the Assam Rifles deployed a bomb disposal team to the attack site on Sunday.

The area was secured, and safety measures were implemented before safely neutralizing unexploded ordnance at a location away from civilian populations.

In a statement later, ULFA-I indicated that it had previously halted offensive operations against the Assam Police as a goodwill gesture after the 2021 Assembly elections, but claimed that security forces continued to target its members through arrests and killings.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was in Haflong on Sunday, described the incident as “unfortunate” and announced that a joint operation involving the Army and Assam Police is in progress to capture those responsible.

In response to the attack, security measures have been intensified in Tinsukia and surrounding areas.
