Dhubri, Aug 18: The Assam government has mandated the expulsion of a Bangladeshi national who was convicted for illegally entering India, instructing him to exit the state within a 24-hour timeframe.
On August 14, the District Magistrate of South Salmara-Mankachar issued an order for Mohammad Masood, also known as Mister, aged 24, to leave Assam via the South Salmara-Mankachar-Dhubri route for lawful deportation back to Bangladesh.
The directive warned that non-compliance would result in actions under the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950, along with other relevant laws.
Masood, who hails from Ratanpur village in Kurigram district, Bangladesh, was detained by Border Security Force (BSF) personnel on January 13 this year for allegedly crossing into India without authorization.
He was subsequently transferred to Mankachar Police Station, where a case was filed against him as Mankachar PS Case No. 07/2026, linked to PRC No. 53/2026, under various legal provisions.
On July 21, the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate of South Salmara-Mankachar found Masood guilty and sentenced him to one month, seven months, and three months of simple imprisonment for the respective charges, with the sentences to run concurrently.
His imprisonment term concluded on August 12, after which he was moved from District Jail, Dhubri, to the Matia Holding Centre in Goalpara for further deportation procedures.
The Senior Superintendent of Police (B), South Salmara-Mankachar, requested an expulsion order to facilitate his lawful removal from India.
The District Magistrate's order instructed the Senior Superintendent of Police (B) to record Masood's biometric and demographic information on the Foreigner Identification Portal and ensure his removal.
The SSP (B), Goalpara, was tasked with taking necessary actions for his deportation.
The order highlighted that Masood's offenses included unauthorized entry into India, allegedly involving damage to international border fencing, which poses a risk to border security and immigration law enforcement.
It was stated that Masood's ongoing presence in Assam could jeopardize public interest and the state's internal security.
Authorities were also instructed to address any Aadhaar card, electoral roll entry, or ration card associated with Masood, as well as any movable or immovable property he may possess.
This expulsion order is part of Assam's intensified efforts against illegal immigration.
Previously, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed the state Assembly in July that over 1,600 illegal immigrants from Bangladesh had been repatriated from Assam between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2026, following their identification.
Sarma noted that some of these identified illegal immigrants were "sent back," while others faced "expulsion" or "deportation." He also clarified that no identified illegal immigrant would be repatriated if an appeal is pending before the Gauhati High Court or the Supreme Court.
