Assam Minister Nandita Gorlosa Joins Congress After BJP Denial
Nandita Gorlosa Switches Allegiance to Congress
On Sunday, Nandita Gorlosa, an Assam minister, made the decision to join the Congress party after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chose not to grant her a ticket for the upcoming Assembly elections.
Earlier that day, she had resigned from her position in the BJP and stepped down as the minister responsible for sports and youth welfare.
The Congress party announced that its candidate for the Haflong Assembly constituency, Nirmal Langthasa, has agreed to withdraw his candidacy to allow Gorlosa to represent the party in that seat. Langthasa had been officially named as the party's candidate for Haflong on the same day.
Gorlosa previously secured victory in this constituency during the 2021 elections.
In the forthcoming elections, the BJP has nominated Rupali Langthasa to contest from Haflong.
The elections in Assam are scheduled for April 9, with the counting of votes set for May 4.
Jitendra Singh, a leader within the Congress and head of the party's Assam unit, praised Gorlosa for being a “strong advocate for Dima Hasao [district] over the past five years, remaining steadfast in her convictions despite facing personal and political challenges.”
