Bengaluru, May 17: Authorities in Bengaluru have apprehended a man from Assam in connection with the murder of a 47-year-old woman, whose body was discovered in a lake after she allegedly pressured him to marry her.

The victim's remains were found in Tirupalya Lake, located within the jurisdiction of the Hebbagodi police station, on May 9. While the woman was from another state, the identities of both the victim and the suspect have not been revealed.

Initially, the case was classified as an unnatural death. However, subsequent autopsy results and medical opinions indicated that the woman had been strangled and suffocated, leading police to initiate a murder investigation on their own accord.

Using circumstantial and technical evidence, law enforcement located and arrested the suspect at his home in Tirupalya, Anekal taluk, on May 14.

During questioning, the suspect reportedly admitted to having an illicit relationship with the victim and claimed that she had been persistently urging him to marry her.

According to police, he allegedly strangled and suffocated her before disposing of her body in the lake, hidden among dense vegetation to hide the crime.

Following his arrest, the suspect was presented in court, as confirmed by police.

This incident has drawn parallels to a previous case involving another Assam native in Bengaluru last year.

In June 2025, a 33-year-old man from Assam, named Shamshuddin, was taken into custody for allegedly killing his live-in partner during a dispute. Reports indicated that he had concealed her body in a bag, transported it approximately 20 kilometers on a motorcycle, and discarded it into a garbage truck before fleeing the area.

In the current case, the suspect has been brought before the court, according to police.
