Election Schedule Unveiled for Assam

Guwahati, Mar 15: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially released the timeline for the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections, with voting scheduled for April 9 and the counting of ballots set for May 4.

With over 2.5 crore voters registered, Assam is gearing up for a significant democratic event as citizens prepare to elect representatives for the 126-member Assembly for the next five years.

The deadline for submitting nominations is March 24.

In light of the election schedule announcement, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is now in effect, which limits new policy declarations and the use of government resources for campaigning.

During a press briefing in New Delhi, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar stated that the Commission had conducted visits to all states involved in the elections to assess their readiness.

“During these visits, we engaged with all recognized political parties to gather their feedback. We also met with district electoral officers, superintendents of police, inspectors general, and deputy inspectors general. Additionally, discussions were held with chief electoral officers, chief secretaries, and directors general of police from the respective states and Union Territories,” Kumar explained.

The elections in Assam are anticipated to be highly competitive, with major political parties preparing for a fierce contest across all 126 Assembly seats.

According to the Election Commission, Assam will have 31,486 polling stations, comprising 3,775 in urban areas and 27,711 in rural locations.

Kumar noted that the majority of polling stations will be situated in rural regions, with an average of 750 to 850 voters assigned to each station.

Model polling stations will be established in all states and Union Territories, including those managed by women and those operated by individuals with disabilities.

Assam's election will coincide with voting in Kerala and the Union Territory of Puducherry. Tamil Nadu will hold its elections on April 23, while West Bengal will conduct its elections in two phases on April 23 and April 29. The counting of votes for all these regions will take place on May 4.

In total, across the five states and the Union Territory participating in the elections, there are approximately 17.4 crore voters, 824 Assembly constituencies, 2,18,807 polling stations, and around 25 lakh election officials involved in the electoral process.

With the election timeline now established, political activities in Assam are expected to escalate in the coming weeks as parties finalize their candidates and launch their campaigns ahead of the April 9 elections.
