Guwahati, May 25: The Assam government has officially revealed the timeline for Phase-I of Census 2027, set to take place statewide from August 17 to September 15, 2026. The self-enumeration period will be accessible from August 2 to August 16 via the official online portal.
This schedule was established after a comprehensive review meeting focused on Census readiness, where officials evaluated various aspects including field operations, training, digital infrastructure, supervision, and public engagement ahead of the nationwide initiative.
Chief Secretary Dr. Ravi Kota emphasized the importance of collaborative preparation and public involvement to facilitate the smooth execution of the Census. He stated, “Successful execution of Census 2027 will necessitate coordinated administrative efforts, public engagement, and timely readiness at all levels.”
Officials indicated that the Population Enumeration for Phase-II in Assam is slated for February 2027, aligning with the national timeline, with a reference date set for March 1, 2027.
In preparation, two national trainers from the Directorate of Census Operations, Assam, have been appointed to lead training programs throughout the state.
A total of 59 master trainers have been selected, with their training scheduled from June 9 to June 12, 2026. Additionally, the state government has confirmed 1,109 Field Trainers, whose training is tentatively planned for the third week of June.
Approximately 83,535 enumerators and supervisors, including reserve personnel, will be deployed for the Phase-I Census operations across Assam.
The Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India underscored the significance of technology in this endeavor, noting that digital tools, self-enumeration, and real-time monitoring systems will be crucial for ensuring accurate and transparent data collection.
Chief Principal Census Officer of Assam, Biswajit Pegu, encouraged citizens to engage actively in the process. He stated, “The cooperation and participation of the public, along with adherence to the responsibilities outlined in the Census Act of 1948 and notifications from the Assam government, are vital for the successful execution of this significant national exercise.”
Officials mentioned that the data collected during Phase-I will assist both state and central governments in effectively planning housing, infrastructure, and the provision of essential services in both rural and urban settings.
The review meeting included the participation of Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan, the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, along with senior officials from the Assam government, the Chief Principal Census Officer-cum-Director of Census Operations Assam, the State Nodal Officer, district commissioners, municipal commissioners-cum-principal census officers from all districts and municipal corporations, and officials from the Directorate of Census Operations, Assam.
Census 2027 will mark India’s inaugural digital Census, conducted in two phases: House-listing and Housing Census (HLO) and Population Enumeration (PE).
Phase-I will concentrate on housing and households rather than individual persons, gathering data on housing conditions, available amenities, and household assets. This phase will also lay the groundwork for Population Enumeration in Phase-II.
Residents of Assam will have the opportunity to self-enumerate through the designated portal before trained enumerators conduct house-to-house verification using digital devices via se.census.gov.in.
