Assam's Chief Minister Announces Swift Deportation Policy

On Thursday, Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, announced that the state government will deport any individual declared foreign by the tribunal within a week. During a press conference, he revealed that the government has already identified and sent back 2,000 foreign nationals. Sarma emphasized that efforts to expedite deportations have been intensified, stating, "From now on, anyone declared foreign by the tribunal will be sent back within a week. We have successfully identified and deported 2,000 illegal foreigners."

Foreign Tribunal's Role and Government Actions

The foreign tribunal in Assam handles cases related to immigrants and foreign nationals. In line with this policy, Chief Minister Sarma mentioned on December 25 that the state has adopted a no-compromise approach against illegal immigrants, instructing district administrations to issue immediate deportation orders wherever necessary. Additionally, while addressing journalists, Sarma praised the state's law and order situation, claiming a reduction in crime rates and an increase in conviction rates.

Improvements in Law Enforcement and Infrastructure

According to the Home Ministry, Assam ranks first among all states in implementing new criminal laws. The number of registered cases dropped from 133,000 in 2021 to 43,748 in 2025, with an 81% increase in the filing of chargesheets in courts. The conviction rate has also risen from 6% in 2021 to 26.38% now. Furthermore, Sarma announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for the 32-kilometer Kaziranga Elevated Corridor in January and the proposed Gelefu railway line project in February.

Infrastructure Developments in Assam

The Chief Minister noted significant progress in the infrastructure sector over the past five years, with four new bridges under construction over the Brahmaputra River. He mentioned that the bridge connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati will be inaugurated in February. Prime Minister Modi is expected to lay the foundation stone for the Kaziranga Elevated Corridor, which is estimated to cost ₹6,957 crores, on January 17 or 18.
