Assam Government Provides Initial Relief to Flood-Affected Families
Relief Efforts in Assam Amidst Severe Flooding
Guwahati, August 3 - The Assam government has initiated the first installment of interim relief for families affected by flooding, distributing approximately ₹75,000 per household on Monday, as reported by officials. The death toll from the devastating floods in Upper Assam has now risen to 85.
Three additional fatalities were confirmed on Sunday. Meanwhile, the number of individuals impacted by the floods has decreased to around 135,000. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is currently visiting the most severely affected districts and has launched the first relief installment from Dibrugarh.
According to officials, families in the districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat, whose homes have suffered significant damage, will receive ₹15,000 each as part of the first installment. Additional assistance will also be provided, bringing the total relief amount to ₹75,000 per family. On Monday, the Chief Minister will tour various areas in Sivasagar district to assess relief and rehabilitation efforts and meet with flood-affected residents.
On Sunday, three more lives were lost due to the floods, all from Sivasagar district, which is among the hardest-hit areas in the current wave of flooding. A total of 136,200 people in the districts of Charaideo, Dhemaji, Golaghat, Jorhat, and Sivasagar are still affected by the floods.
On Saturday, approximately 180,000 individuals were impacted across these five districts, with Sivasagar being the most severely affected, where over 55,000 people were affected. Charaideo saw around 40,000 individuals impacted, while Jorhat reported about 22,000 affected residents.
The administration has established a total of 54 relief camps and distribution centers across the five districts, currently providing shelter and assistance to 13,771 individuals. Additionally, 15,422 hectares of agricultural land remain submerged. Officials noted that the Dhansiri River in Numaligarh, Golaghat district, is flowing above the danger mark.
