Assam Government Mobilizes Aid for Flood Victims in Upper Assam

Assistance for Flood-Affected Areas

The Assam state unit of the BJP announced on Wednesday that the government is committed to providing all possible assistance to those affected by the unprecedented floods in the districts of Jorhat, Sivasagar, and Charaideo. According to the release, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited several flood relief camps in these districts to assess the situation and spoke with families taking shelter there. The statement assured that essential services such as medical aid, food supplies, clean drinking water, and other necessities would be provided without interruption.

Sarma also reassured flood-affected individuals that the government would extend necessary support for rebuilding damaged homes and replacing vital documents, books, and other belongings lost in the floods.

Compensation for Victims

The release further stated that the state government would provide an immediate compensation of ₹4 lakh to the families of each individual who lost their life in this disaster. BJP Assam President Dilip Saikia instructed party district presidents, district in-charges, and workers in the affected areas to stand by the flood victims and offer all possible assistance during this challenging time. Earlier, on July 20, while presiding over the Lok Sabha proceedings as pro-tem speaker, Saikia urged MPs to discuss the flood situation in Assam.

Historical Parliamentary Initiative

The press release highlighted that this initiative, launched at the behest of the Lok Sabha Speaker, would be remembered as a significant moment in India's parliamentary democracy, as it drew national attention to the flood crisis in Assam.

Oversight of Relief Operations

The Chief Minister has assigned the responsibility of overseeing rescue and relief operations in the affected areas to Water Resources and Flood Control Minister Sushanta Borgohain, along with cabinet ministers Bimal Borah, Keshav Mahanta, and Ajanta Neog.
