Strengthening Women's Empowerment in Assam

To enhance women's empowerment across the nation, both the central and state governments are implementing various welfare schemes. In this context, the Assam government has introduced a significant initiative aimed at supporting women. The state has commenced providing initial funding to women associated with self-help groups to promote self-employment. According to the Assam government, this initiative is expected to not only increase employment opportunities in rural areas but also improve family incomes, enabling women to establish their own small businesses.

Financial Support of ₹10,000

The Assam government has launched the Chief Minister's Women Entrepreneurship Campaign, known as the MMUA scheme. Under this program, members of women's self-help groups across all 35 districts are now receiving ₹10,000. Chief Minister Sarma has reported that over 1.5 million women have already benefited from this financial assistance. Initially, the scheme aimed to reach 3.2 million women, but this target has now been increased to 4 million. Government statistics indicate that approximately 800,000 women have already become millionaires, with thousands receiving the ₹10,000 support. This initiative is bolstering the rural economy and enabling women to start their own ventures.

Eligibility and Application Process

Women who are part of a recognized self-help group can avail themselves of this scheme. To participate, they should contact the self-help groups operating at the panchayat or block level in their district. Required documents include a bank account, Aadhaar card, proof of residence, and documentation related to group membership. After verification, the initial installment of ₹10,000 is transferred to the women's bank accounts.

If women utilize this funding effectively to start their small businesses, the government offers a loan of ₹25,000 at a low interest rate. Additionally, if the business proves successful, they may receive up to ₹50,000 as a third installment.
