Severe Weather Conditions Prompt Government Response

In response to reports of heavy rainfall and sudden flooding in the Lower Subansiri district of neighboring Arunachal Pradesh, the Assam government has declared a high alert. Officials stated that they are closely monitoring the situation, as the rainfall in Lower Subansiri could potentially impact low-lying areas in several districts of Assam. According to a statement, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati and the weather station in Itanagar reported approximately 72.8 mm of rainfall at the Yazali station in Lower Subansiri over the past 24 hours, with most of it occurring between 6 AM and 9 AM on June 24.

Satellite and radar imagery revealed that the heavy rainfall has led to flash floods in the upper catchment areas, significantly increasing river flows. The statement noted that there have been reports of sudden flooding near the Panior Lower Hydroelectric Project. Due to the rapid rise in water flow, operational measures were implemented, including the opening of a spillway gate to release excess water. Reports from Yazali indicate that the sudden floods, accompanied by debris flow, have caused damage to homes and infrastructure in the affected areas.

Media sources have reported that three individuals are currently missing, although officials have not yet confirmed any casualties. The government warned that the heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas and increased river flows could lead to a significant rise in water levels and flow rates in the Brahmaputra and its tributaries in the low-lying regions. It is anticipated that the flood wave will first impact districts such as Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, and Sonitpur, before moving on to other districts and reaching Dhubri within the next couple of days.

The statement emphasized that the situation in the state is being monitored at the highest levels. Following directives from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Secretary of Assam has communicated with all relevant officials, instructing them to remain fully alert and ensure all necessary preparations are in place. District administrations and relevant departments in potentially affected areas have been advised to maintain strict vigilance and implement timely rescue and response measures.
