Plans for a New Medical Institute

Hailakandi, Dec 6: The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced on Saturday that discussions have commenced regarding the establishment of a medical institute modeled after AIMS in the Barak Valley.

During a press conference held at a seed-capital distribution event for the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan (MMUA) in Hailakandi, Sarma mentioned that internal discussions are in progress to create a facility similar to the existing AIMS in the Brahmaputra Valley.

“We are currently discussing the need for an AIMS in the Barak Valley, given that one already exists in the Brahmaputra Valley. However, these discussions are still in the early stages,” he remarked.

The Chief Minister noted that Krishnendu Paul, the MLA from Patharkandi, has proposed a piece of land in his constituency for the potential institute.

“Paul has offered land, as an AIMS facility would require approximately 1,200 bighas. We need to explore options, and this will take time. We are still in the very initial phase of this process,” Sarma explained.

Later, in a post on a microblogging site, Sarma emphasized that “preliminary discussions are ongoing to ensure that world-class healthcare is accessible in every part of Assam. No area will be overlooked.”

This announcement follows a series of recent government initiatives, including the approval of a Rs 295-crore, 208-bed super-speciality hospital at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) and the long-awaited greenfield airport project at Doloo tea estate.

Sarma also pointed out the Centre’s commitment to enhancing Assam’s cultural identity, stating that “Modi ji is promoting Assam’s Gamusa and Tea as well.”

Earlier, he ceremonially distributed Rs 10,000 cheques to 17,775 women beneficiaries of Self-Help Groups under the Mohila Udyomita Scheme in Hailakandi.
