Guwahati, July 25: Assam is currently grappling with one of its most severe flood crises in recent memory, prompting a wave of support from across the nation. Political leaders from various parties and notable public figures have come together to show solidarity with those affected by the floods.
The humanitarian situation has worsened, with the death toll now at 62 and over 10 lakh individuals impacted across nine districts. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported late Friday that an additional 14 fatalities occurred within the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 62 as of Saturday morning.
Messages of support and prayers have been flooding in from the Northeast and beyond, highlighting the collective concern for the affected families.
Pema Khandu, the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, expressed his support for Assam, paying tribute to the rescue personnel involved in relief efforts. He stated, "My thoughts and prayers are with every family affected by the devastating floods in Assam. Salute to the NDRF, SDRF, Armed Forces, police personnel, volunteers, and everyone working tirelessly in rescue and relief operations," in a social media post on Saturday.
He further added, "May those affected find strength, safety, and hope. Praying for the waters to recede soon and for Assam to recover stronger."
Zoramthanga, the former Chief Minister of Mizoram and president of the Mizo National Front (MNF), also conveyed his condolences to the families mourning their losses and acknowledged the ongoing relief efforts by the Assam government.
He remarked, "Due to continuous heavy rainfall, Assam is facing severe floods. We deeply mourn the suffering of the people of Assam due to this natural calamity and extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. We pray that no further damage occurs and normalcy returns soon."
From southern India, Andhra Pradesh's Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan expressed that the people of his state stand firmly with Assam during this crisis. He stated, "The people of Andhra Pradesh stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Assam. Every life lost is an irreplaceable tragedy, and every family forced to leave its home carries a pain that words cannot fully express. My heartfelt condolences are with those who have lost their loved ones, and my prayers are with everyone facing these difficult times."
The entertainment industry has also taken notice, with singer Armaan Malik calling for greater national attention to the disaster. He tweeted, "The #AssamFloods have been absolutely devastating. With so much happening across the country at the moment, this tragedy isn't being highlighted enough. If you're able to, please consider helping the people of Assam recover & rebuild."
As floodwaters continue to engulf large areas of the state, rescue teams, security forces, volunteers, and local authorities are actively engaged in relief operations, while thousands of affected families await assistance.
Despite ongoing rescue and relief efforts, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma acknowledged that the state government has yet to reach approximately 80,000 flood-affected individuals with necessary relief supplies. The situation remains dire, with continuous rainfall causing water levels in several rivers to rise further.
This crisis has sparked widespread concern and solidarity from leaders, public figures, and citizens nationwide, highlighting the magnitude of the disaster facing Assam.
