Health Concerns Rise Amidst Receding Floodwaters

Jorhat, July 26: As the floodwaters in Assam's Dergaon begin to recede, residents are now facing a new set of challenges, including unsanitary living conditions, snake infestations, and the risk of disease outbreaks.

In various villages within the Kakodonga region of Dergaon, stagnant water, heaps of garbage, swarms of flies, and an increasing number of snakes and other dangerous creatures have left the community in a state of fear.

Residents claim that the health department has not acted swiftly enough to address the worsening situation and prevent potential disease spread.

One affected individual expressed, "We are at the mercy of the flood. It's not just about receiving help; we need basic supplies like tarpaulin sheets, bleaching powder, and phenyl to manage our living conditions. Snakes, rats, and other animals are invading our homes. We've been living in waterlogged conditions for five to six days, and while the water has receded a bit, our homes remain unsafe."

Local reports indicate that approximately 10,000 individuals in the Dergaon constituency have been impacted by the floods, with around 25,000 livestock also suffering from the inundation.

Another resident noted that although relief supplies such as rice, mustard oil, and salt have reached the affected areas, there is an urgent need for medical supplies and sanitation efforts to avert disease outbreaks.

"Our homes are still submerged. While rehabilitation is crucial, the administration must prioritize providing medicines. The area is infested with mosquitoes, earthworms, snakes, and other creatures. We have received some relief materials, but we urgently need disinfectants and spraying to ensure safety. Only a small amount of water has receded since yesterday," a local woman stated.

As floodwaters continue to withdraw, residents emphasize the need to shift focus from immediate relief to public health, warning that without prompt sanitation measures, the aftermath of the floods could lead to a significant health crisis in the affected areas.

They have called on the health department and local authorities to quickly organize health camps and implement spraying of disinfectants and germicides in the impacted villages.

The flood-affected individuals have also reached out to the MLA of the Dergaon constituency, urging intervention to ensure that essential sanitation supplies are delivered to the most severely affected regions.
