Assam Flood Situation Improves as No New Fatalities Reported

Guwahati, July 28: For the first time in a week, Assam has reported no new fatalities related to flooding, with the number of affected individuals decreasing to 4.45 lakh as water levels recede in various districts, according to officials on Tuesday.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) confirmed that the death toll from the floods remains at 68, with no additional deaths or missing persons reported during this period.
While the overall situation is improving, six districts continue to experience flooding: Sivasagar, Golaghat, Charaideo, Jorhat, Nagaon, and Kamrup (Metropolitan).
Charaideo is the most severely impacted area, with 1.88 lakh residents affected, followed by Sivasagar with 1.44 lakh and Jorhat with 74,458 individuals impacted.
A central team consisting of five members, led by M Ramachandrudu, Joint Secretary of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, visited Sivasagar on Monday to evaluate the flood situation in Upper Assam. The team reviewed relief and rehabilitation efforts alongside Assam ministers Keshab Mahanta and Bimal Borah, as well as local officials.
The state government is actively working to restore essential services in the flood-affected regions. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that electricity supply is being gradually restored as water levels fall.
"Since this morning, the number of families without power has decreased by another 25 percent. As floodwaters recede, power supply is being reinstated in more affected areas. I will continue to provide regular updates until power is fully restored to every household impacted," Sarma stated in a social media update on Monday evening.
Relief operations are ongoing in the affected districts. Chief Minister Sarma mentioned on Tuesday that 71,000 individuals are currently housed in relief camps, and 1,690 relief distribution centers are operating continuously to support the affected population.
Rescue and relief efforts are being carried out by various agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Civil Defence personnel, with 67 boats deployed in flooded areas.
Despite the improving conditions, the Dhansiri (South) river continues to flow above the danger level at Numaligarh in Golaghat district.
The disaster has inflicted considerable damage to agriculture and livestock. ASDMA reports that 37,139.52 hectares of crop land remain submerged, and 26,679 animals have been lost.
Additionally, damage to homes, roads, and other public infrastructure has been reported across various affected districts.
