Assam Flood Situation Improves Amid Ongoing Challenges

Guwahati, July 26: The flood situation in Assam has shown signs of improvement as of Saturday, with water levels decreasing in various districts. However, the death toll has tragically risen to 62, with at least eight individuals still reported missing.
Government Response and Relief Efforts
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that relief and rescue operations are being optimized, confirming that all flood-affected villages have been reached. He expressed optimism that conditions would significantly improve by Sunday, emphasizing ongoing targeted airdrops of relief supplies to hard-to-reach areas.
Extent of the Flood Impact
As per the latest flood report, the Dikhow River in Sivasagar and the Dhansiri River at Numaligarh are still flowing above danger levels. This current flooding has impacted 10 districts, 28 revenue circles, and 810 villages, affecting nearly 655,000 individuals. Currently, 274 relief camps and distribution centers are operational throughout the state.
Support from the Armed Forces and Government Officials
The Indian Air Force is assisting the state government by transporting and airdropping relief materials to isolated areas. President Droupadi Murmu has expressed her condolences for the lives lost, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured Chief Minister Sarma of full support from the central government for relief, rehabilitation, and rebuilding efforts.
Ongoing Challenges in Affected Areas
Despite improvements, Nazira and Sivasagar are still severely affected. Thousands in Nazira have been displaced due to the Dikhow River flooding, which has devastated homes, roads, schools, markets, hospitals, tea estates, and agricultural land. Many families are currently living in relief camps or on rooftops, facing shortages of drinking water and essential supplies.
Agricultural and Livestock Damage
Farmers have incurred significant losses as paddy fields and seedbeds are buried under mud and silt, and train services in the area remain suspended due to damaged railway tracks. Medical teams are actively conducting health camps in relief shelters in Nazira, providing medicines and health check-ups to prevent disease outbreaks among displaced individuals.
Critical Conditions in Other Districts
In Sivasagar town, floodwaters from the Darika River continue to inundate several areas, leaving many roads and homes submerged. The situation is also dire in parts of Golaghat district, particularly in the Dergaon revenue circle, where the Gelabeel River has submerged around 20 villages. Residents are facing shortages of drinking water and fodder, while riverbank erosion raises concerns in several villages along the Gelabeel.
Impact on Livestock and Veterinary Support
The livestock sector has been severely affected, with Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Nilima Devi reporting that approximately 858,000 livestock have been impacted, including 725 reported deaths and over 28,000 sick animals receiving treatment. Eleven veterinary experts have been deployed, and 40 veterinary camps have been established across Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat districts. Financial assistance will be considered following a thorough assessment of losses faced by livestock and fish farmers.
Restoration Efforts for Railway Services
Restoration work on the railway lines in Upper Assam is ongoing, with over 700 workers and heavy machinery engaged in repairing damaged tracks to restore train services as soon as possible.
