Political Landscape Intensifies in Assam Ahead of Elections
As the Assam assembly elections approach, the political atmosphere in the state has reached a fever pitch. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress have both released their manifestos, aiming to attract voters. The BJP emphasizes development, security, and infrastructure, while Congress focuses on social security, economic assistance, and the expansion of rights. Comparing the two manifestos becomes crucial for understanding the electoral direction.
Today, in Guwahati, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman launched the BJP's manifesto, promising a substantial infrastructure investment of five lakh crore rupees. This manifesto includes 31 commitments, highlighting the protection of land, heritage, and dignity for indigenous people. The BJP has pledged to reclaim land encroached upon by Bangladeshi immigrants, implement a uniform civil code, and enhance job opportunities for the youth.
Congress's Promises and Focus on Social Welfare
Sitharaman stated that the BJP's manifesto is based on the development achieved over the past decade, which she claims Congress failed to accomplish during its long tenure. She asserted that peace has been established in Assam under BJP governance, leading to accelerated development. Many young Assamese are reportedly returning from jobs abroad, indicating increasing opportunities. She accused Congress of keeping Assam under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) for an extended period due to its policies.
In contrast, Congress has introduced five key guarantees in its manifesto, directly impacting the lives of the common people. Party President Mallikarjun Kharge unveiled the manifesto at a rally in Naoboicha, promising unconditional monthly financial assistance for women. Congress claims that every woman will receive a direct cash transfer to her bank account, along with a support of fifty thousand rupees to start self-employment.
Addressing Land Rights and Justice
Congress criticized the current government's conditional assistance, asserting that their plan will be entirely unconditional. Additionally, they promised cashless health insurance of up to twenty-five lakh rupees for each family.
On the issue of land rights, Congress made a significant announcement, pledging to grant permanent land leases to not just one lakh but ten lakh landowners, eliminating the need for annual paperwork. The manifesto also includes a plan to provide monthly support of one thousand two hundred fifty rupees to all senior citizens in the state.
Justice is another focal point for Congress, which has vowed to deliver justice in the late Jubin Garg case within a hundred days and to expose the conspiracy behind the incident. Furthermore, state Congress President Gaurav Gogoi accused the BJP of divisive politics, promising strict laws against those inciting communal tensions, with penalties of up to five years in prison.

When comparing the two manifestos, the BJP's focus is on large-scale development, investment, and law and order, while Congress emphasizes immediate economic assistance, social security, and rights-based initiatives.
