Assam Election Counting Begins

The counting of votes for the Assam elections commenced at 8 AM, with 722 candidates vying for 126 assembly seats across 40 counting centers in 35 districts. The initial trends indicate that the BJP is leading in 101 constituencies. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma from the BJP is currently ahead, while Congress candidate Bidisha Niog is trailing behind.

In the early stages of counting, Himanta Biswa Sarma is showing a strong performance, while Congress's Bidisha Niog is not faring well. Gaurav Gogoi from Congress is also lagging behind in the Jorhat seat. The BJP is maintaining a lead in over 100 seats. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed confidence that the results will align with their expectations, predicting a return of the NDA government under BJP leadership. He stated that they are close to securing around 100 seats with their allies.


The electronic voting machines (EVMs) containing the electoral fates of the candidates were opened at the counting centers across the state.


To ensure security at the counting centers and EVM strongrooms, 25 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), each comprising approximately 100 personnel, have been deployed. Additionally, two extra companies of CAPF will be stationed for static duty, while 93 companies of the state armed police are assigned to various districts. The voting took place on April 9, witnessing a turnout of 85.96%.


Candidate Overview

Among the 722 candidates, Congress has fielded the highest number with 99 candidates, followed by BJP with 90, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) with 30, and Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) with 26 candidates. The Bodo People's Front (BPF) has 11 candidates. In the opposition alliance, Raijor Dal contested in 13 seats, Assam Ethnic Council in 10, CPI(M) in three, and the All Party Hill Leaders Conference in two seats. Key candidates include BJP's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Congress state president Gaurav Gogoi, Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, and Raijor Dal leader and MP Akhil Gogoi.
