Assam Education Minister Adjusts School Timings Amid Rising Temperatures

School Timings Rescheduled Due to Heat
Guwahati, June 10: With temperatures soaring in various regions of the state, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu has empowered all District Commissioners (DCs) to modify school schedules based on local climatic conditions.
On Tuesday, Guwahati recorded a peak temperature of 37°C. Minister Pegu took to social media to emphasize, "I encourage all District Commissioners to stay vigilant and utilize their authority to change school timings according to the current weather conditions."
Further updates regarding schedule modifications will be provided by district authorities, who will assess real-time weather data.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that on June 8, certain areas in Assam and Meghalaya experienced maximum temperatures ranging from 35°C to 39°C. Some regions were noted to be experiencing temperatures that were "above normal," exceeding the seasonal average by more than 5°C.
It is crucial to mention that the IMD has not issued any official heatwave warning for Assam or Guwahati. Although some areas are experiencing higher temperatures, they do not qualify as a heatwave. Local authorities are actively monitoring the situation.
Assam, along with the rest of Northeast India, is preparing for a hot summer, with the IMD forecasting a below-average monsoon for the region this year. The state government's proactive measures are in response to this broader climatic scenario.
Earlier in April, the IMD's long-range forecast for the 2025 Southwest Monsoon indicated that most parts of the country would see above-normal rainfall, except for the Northeast.
“The spatial distribution suggests above-normal seasonal rainfall is very likely over most parts of the country except some areas over Northwest India, Northeast India and South Peninsular India, where below-normal rainfall is likely,” the IMD stated.
