Gaurav Gogoi's Response to Election Outcome

Gaurav Gogoi, the President of Assam Congress, recently described the results of the Assam Assembly elections as "extremely disappointing" and stated that he would take full responsibility for the outcome. This statement was made during a review meeting with the newly elected legislators on May 10, 2026. Gogoi expressed to reporters that the recent election results were indeed disheartening, reiterating his commitment to accountability.

He further mentioned that he has informed the party's higher command and that an internal review process has commenced.

Next Steps for the Party

Gogoi added that he has communicated with the higher command regarding the need for organizational restructuring and that the decision on the next steps lies with them. He believes that next month, they will attempt to uncover the underlying reasons that led to the specific results of the 2026 elections. In the recent Assam Assembly elections, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), achieved a decisive victory, securing 102 seats compared to the opposition's 75 seats. The BJP won 82 seats, while its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF), each obtained 10 seats.

Opposition's Performance

The Congress-led opposition alliance, known as the 'Mitrajoot', managed to secure 19 seats, while the Raijor Dal and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) each won 2 seats. Notably, the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) did not win any seats. Following the conclusion of the assembly's term, outgoing Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma submitted his resignation to Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya, paving the way for the formation of a BJP-led government for the third consecutive time in Assam.

Upcoming Government Ceremony

On May 7, Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia announced that the oath-taking ceremony for the new state government would take place on May 12 at 11:00 AM at Khanapara Field in Guwahati, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi attending as the chief guest. Saikia stated that this event would symbolize the formation of the new government following the NDA's strong performance in the elections.
