Assam Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi Resigns Ahead of Assembly Elections

In a significant political shift, Assam Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi has resigned from the party just ahead of the assembly elections. His departure follows the recent exit of former Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah to the BJP. Bordoloi expressed feelings of isolation and humiliation within the party, stating that his concerns were not taken seriously by the leadership. As the political landscape in Assam shifts, Bordoloi's future moves remain uncertain, especially with assembly elections scheduled for April 9. This resignation raises questions about the Congress party's stability in the region.

Pradyut Bordoloi's Departure from Congress

On Tuesday, Pradyut Bordoloi, a Member of Parliament from Assam representing the Congress party, announced his resignation as the state prepares for upcoming assembly elections.

This decision follows closely on the heels of former Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah's departure to the Bharatiya Janata Party less than a month prior.

Before Bordoloi's resignation, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had publicly extended an invitation for him to join the BJP, although he noted that there had been no direct discussions between them. Bordoloi later confirmed to a local media outlet that he had received an offer from the BJP but did not specify if he would accept it.

The Congress party expressed disappointment over his resignation, labeling it as 'very unfortunate.' Congress leader Subrata Borah mentioned that Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi and Jitendra Singh, the party's in-charge for Assam, had visited Bordoloi in an attempt to persuade him to stay.

Bordoloi is one of the three Lok Sabha MPs from Assam for the Congress and has previously held ministerial positions in the state under former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

In a statement, Bordoloi expressed feelings of humiliation regarding certain issues, stating, 'Even the Congress leadership was not showing sympathy towards me.' He added, 'I felt isolated within the Congress and became very lonely. I have been associated with the Congress all my life, but recently I have faced significant challenges.'

Just days before his resignation, Bordoloi had communicated with Singh, expressing his opposition to the renomination of MLA Asif Mohammad Nazar from the Laharighat Assembly constituency, which is part of his Nagaon parliamentary seat. He claimed that his concerns regarding Nazar's alleged connections to an individual involved in an attack against him last year were not taken seriously by party leaders.

In April, while campaigning for local elections, Bordoloi and MLA Sibamoni Bora sustained injuries when their convoy was attacked by a mob in Dhing, Nagaon district. A suspect named Emdadul Islam was arrested in connection with this incident.

In his letter to Singh, Bordoloi expressed frustration over Gogoi's silence when Uttar Pradesh MP Imran Masood, a member of the screening committee for the Assam elections, allegedly dismissed his concerns as 'false' during a Congress Central Election Committee meeting in New Delhi on March 13.

The assembly elections in Assam are set for April 9, with results anticipated on May 4.
