Assam CM Reveals Near-Completion of BJP's Election Strategy Ahead of 2026 Polls
BJP's Election Blueprint Almost Finalized
Guwahati, Dec 4: With the 2026 Assembly elections approaching in less than six months, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday that the BJP's election strategy for Assam is nearly finalized, with only the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) yet to be integrated into the plan.
During a seed capital distribution event in Tamulpur, Sarma stated that the final elements of the BJP's electoral strategy would be established during Union Home Minister Amit Shah's forthcoming visit.
“Aside from the BTC, our preparations for the elections are nearly complete. We have outlined how the campaign will unfold, what actions will be taken, and who will lead the efforts. In essence, our strategy is almost ready,” Sarma remarked.
Shah is anticipated to arrive in Assam either at the end of December or in the first week of January. “After his visit, everything will be confirmed,” he added.
However, Sarma indicated that discussions regarding the BTR would commence only in January, as the region has just concluded the Bodoland Territorial Council elections.
“The current environment in BTC is not conducive for discussions about the Assembly elections since the council polls have just been completed. We will initiate talks with our NDA partners in January,” he explained.
The Chief Minister took the opportunity to criticize the Opposition. When asked if a united opposition could threaten the BJP-led NDA in the upcoming elections, he dismissed the notion confidently.
“Who are the other opponents? I don’t even recognize their names. They didn’t secure a single seat in the BTC. Their names are only known in the media, not among the public,” he stated.
His remarks followed comments from Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) leader and BTC head Hagrama Mohilary, who suggested a potential alliance with the NDA for the 2026 elections.
After the conclusion of the BTC Winter Session on Wednesday, Mohilary confirmed that discussions were ongoing to collaborate for the elections.
However, seat-sharing negotiations have yet to commence. Currently, the NDA holds 75 seats in the Assam Assembly, and Mohilary mentioned that the distribution would be discussed later.
“The BPF aims to contest at least 15 seats, possibly more based on internal decisions,” he noted.
As BTR becomes the final component in the BJP's strategy for 2026, all attention is now on Shah's visit, where the party hopes to finalize its approach for the crucial elections.
