Raha, Sept 28: The campaign for the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll on October 6 received a significant boost as Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to the campaign trail for the first time.
Sarma commenced his campaign supporting BJP candidate Devasish Sharma with a public gathering in Raha, followed by events in Samaguri and Moirabari.
During his address in Raha, Sarma emphasized that the bypoll would not alter the current government at either the state or national level, but rather reinforce their positions if the electorate supports the BJP.
“This election is not about changing the ruling government. It is about strengthening the leadership of Narendra Modi and the state government. Voting for the BJP will empower us,” Sarma stated.
He highlighted that the BJP's campaign would prioritize development and the continuation of existing government initiatives, assuring voters of his commitment to creating job opportunities and fulfilling his promise of 200,000 government recruitments.
Sarma also unveiled several proposed development initiatives for Raha, including plans to add 10,000 beneficiaries to the Orunodoi scheme, ensuring that no mother is excluded from its benefits.
On infrastructure, he announced the construction of 100 kilometers of roads in Raha under the Asom Mala initiative, reiterating the importance of enhancing road connectivity in the region.
Addressing the needs raised by Raha MLA Sashi Kanta Das, Sarma mentioned the necessity for a CDC office, a DSP office, a stadium, an auditorium, a science section at Raha College, a park, a 50-bed hospital, and a bridge connecting Sapormukh and Maruarpatti.
“You have entrusted me as your CM, and I am fully committed to executing all these projects,” he remarked.
Additionally, Sarma indicated that the government would contemplate establishing an Assam Direct Recruitment Examination (ADRE) center with complimentary coaching for local students.
In his critique of the Congress party, which has nominated former Batadrava MLA Sibamoni Bora, Sarma accused them of failing to serve both Hindu and Muslim communities during their tenure.
“I am optimistic that Nagaon will decisively reject Congress this time, erasing their influence, as they have historically failed to deliver justice to either community,” he asserted.
The need for the bypoll arose following the resignation of former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi, who switched to the BJP ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections and subsequently secured the Dispur seat.
Commenting on Bordoloi's political transition, Sarma criticized the Congress for its history of corruption and chaos, while highlighting Bordoloi's shift to the BJP.
He also took a jab at the AIUDF, led by Badruddin Ajmal, stating, “AIUDF seems to be non-existent; I can't even tell if they are active or not.”
Later, Sarma held another campaign meeting in Samaguri, intensifying his criticism of Congress leader Rakibul Hussain and his influence in the area.
He questioned the ability of a non-ruling party MP to secure development projects when both the state and central governments are under BJP leadership.
Sarma referenced Hussain's electoral history in Samaguri, where he was elected MLA in 2016 and 2021, followed by his son Tanzil Hussain's victory in 2026. Election records confirm these victories.
“The Samaguri constituency has lagged in development, with little progress made. No Congress MLA has managed to implement any significant developmental initiatives here,” Sarma concluded.
