Guwahati, Nov 3: On Tuesday, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared that government employees engaging in polygamy would face severe disciplinary measures, including termination from their positions and barring from future government roles, as per the revised service regulations.
During a press conference after the Cabinet meeting, Sarma explained that the Assam Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules have been modified to impose stricter penalties on government personnel involved in polygamous relationships.
The Chief Minister noted that these changes have been made under Rule 7, Clause 6, which introduces a new provision aimed at ensuring harsh penalties for such infractions.
“With the introduction of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Assam, polygamy is now prohibited. If any government employee is found to be practicing polygamy, they will face departmental action. This will lead to their dismissal and disqualification from future government employment,” Sarma stated.
He also emphasized that the Uniform Civil Code's provisions will be uniformly applicable to all religions, including Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity.
This announcement by the Chief Minister represents a crucial move by the state government to uphold the Uniform Civil Code's regulations within the government sector, with the revised service rules outlining severe repercussions for those who breach the law.
