Allegations of Land Grabbing by Assam CM's Family

On Wednesday, Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's family of illegally occupying approximately 12,000 bighas of land across the state. In response, the Chief Minister vehemently rejected these claims, labeling them as false, malicious, and defamatory. He announced plans to initiate civil and criminal defamation proceedings against Gogoi and three other Congress leaders on February 9.

In a post on X, Sarma stated that he would be taking legal action against Jitendra Singh Alwar, Bhupesh Baghel, Gaurav Gogoi, and Debabrata Saikia for making false and defamatory statements during a press conference. He emphasized that the era of hit-and-run politics is over and challenged them to prove their allegations in court if they have any courage or evidence. Sarma expressed that he would not be intimidated by smear campaigns or the political tactics of the so-called sycophants of the Gandhi family.

Earlier in the day, during a press conference in Guwahati, Gogoi claimed that the Congress had conducted an investigation revealing shocking findings about the Chief Minister and his family's land holdings. Responding to Sarma's threat of defamation, Gogoi asserted that it was evident that Himanta Biswa Sarma was intimidated by their press conference. He promised that details of Sarma's alleged corruption and assets would soon be made public in every village of Assam. He added that if Sarma had the courage, he should confront them in the court of public opinion instead of seeking refuge.
