New Delhi, May 31: Continuing his four-day trip to the capital, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met with Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday to explore opportunities for enhancing the defence manufacturing sector in Assam.

After their discussion, Sarma expressed gratitude to the Defence Minister for his support and campaigning during the recent Assam Assembly elections.

“I had a productive meeting with Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, where I thanked him for his time and efforts during the Assam Assembly elections on behalf of both the party and the people of Assam. We also touched on the potential for further developing the defence industry in our state,” Sarma stated.

The Chief Minister mentioned that he sought Singh’s advice on advancing the sector and received positive feedback on attracting investments and encouraging industry involvement.

“He recommended organizing a comprehensive exhibition and conference that would involve both public and private defence industries in Assam,” Sarma added.

He further noted, “The Defence Minister assured us of his support and cooperation, and we will pursue this initiative,” he concluded.

Later that day, Sarma met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who congratulated him on the NDA's electoral success in Assam and promised ongoing support for the state's development.

“It was a pleasure to meet Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. I congratulated him on the remarkable election victory and assured him of our full support for Assam’s continued growth and development,” Jaishankar shared in a social media update.

These meetings followed Sarma's discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to New Delhi.

On Sunday, Sarma announced that the expansion of the Assam Council of Ministers is set for June 5.

He confirmed that this move has received approval from the BJP’s central leadership and will proceed once Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya returns from his overseas trip.

Sarma commenced his visit to the national capital on Saturday, where he is expected to engage in multiple meetings with senior Union ministers and central leaders regarding governance, development, and investment opportunities in Assam.
