Political Tensions Rise Over Economic Statements

In a recent political exchange, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has sharply criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for endorsing U.S. President Donald Trump's comments regarding India's economy. Sarma stated that the past week has significantly revealed Gandhi's true stance, suggesting that the public now perceives him as not merely opposing the BJP but as being against India itself. He emphasized that while Prime Minister Modi engages diplomatically with various nations, Gandhi is tarnishing the country's reputation.

On Thursday, Rahul Gandhi defended Trump's assertion about India's economy, claiming that apart from Prime Minister Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, everyone recognizes India as a 'dead economy' and accused Modi of destroying it. He further alleged that any trade agreement with the U.S. would be dictated by Trump, implying that Modi would comply with the U.S. President's demands.

Trump had made headlines by announcing a 25% tariff on imports from India, shortly before he remarked on social media that both India and Russia could plunge their 'dead economies' together without concern. When asked about Trump's comments, Gandhi told reporters in the Parliament complex, 'He is correct. Everyone knows except the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister that India's economy is a 'dead economy.' I am glad President Trump has brought this fact to light.'
