Assam CM Criticizes Congress for Internal Strife in Muslim-Dominated Areas
Chief Minister's Accusations Against Congress
On Tuesday, Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, accused the Congress party of experiencing internal conflicts solely in constituencies with a majority of Bangladeshi-origin Muslims. Speaking to the media in Nagaon, Sarma stated that the discord within Congress is confined to these specific areas. He has consistently maintained that the party does not stand with the people of Assam and the Assamese community, claiming they have compromised their integrity for the sake of Bangladeshi Muslims.
Call for Change in Political Approach
Sarma further urged the Assam Congress to abandon its politics of appeasement and align itself with the citizens of Assam, condemning such tactics. He highlighted that a particular community has benefited from the Modi government through housing, toilets, roads, government jobs, rations, and a monthly stipend of ₹1250. Despite these benefits, this community continues to support Congress, indicating their preference for appeasement over development, with their primary goal being the removal of Modi and maintaining their community's dominance.
Election Commission's Recent Actions
In a significant move, the Election Commission announced the transfer of five district election officers (DEOs) and an equal number of senior superintendents of police (SSPs) in Assam, just a day after the assembly election schedule was revealed. The DEOs for Kokrajhar, Majuli, Baksa, Chirang, and Udalguri have been reassigned immediately. A letter sent to Assam's Chief Secretary Ravi Kota detailed the appointments, including Dr. P. Uday Praveen replacing Kokrajhar's DEO Pankaj Chakraborty, Srishti Singh taking over from Majuli's Ratul Pathak, and Kimnei Changsang stepping in for Baksa's Dheeraj Saud. Additionally, Madhusudan Nath has been appointed in place of Chirang's DEO Gakul Chandra Brahma, and Jay Vikas has taken over from Pulak Patgiri in Udalguri.
