Assam CM Confirms BJP's Bid for Upcoming Rajya Sabha Elections
BJP's Strategy for Rajya Sabha Seats in Assam
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) along with its allies will contest all three Rajya Sabha seats that will become vacant in Assam this April. Sarma expressed confidence that their candidates are likely to secure victory in two of the seats, while the third seat remains a possibility for both winning and losing.
The terms of two BJP MPs, Bhubaneswar Kalita and Rameshwar Teli, along with independent MP Ajit Bhuyan, are set to conclude in April. During a press conference on Friday, Sarma stated, 'The BJP, along with AGP (Asom Gana Parishad) and our coalition, will field candidates for all three seats. We are certain to win two seats, and we might win or lose the third.'
The Chief Minister noted that in the previous election, the BJP and its allies chose not to field a candidate against Bhuyan, believing he would act impartially and work for the welfare of the people.
He also referenced allegations of corruption related to the misuse of Bhuyan's MP fund, stating, 'We all know what he has done with the Rajya Sabha MP fund.'
Currently, the BJP holds 64 seats in the assembly, while its allies AGP, United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), and Bodoland People's Front (BPF) have nine, seven, and three seats, respectively.
In opposition, the Congress has 26 seats, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has 15, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has one. There is also one independent MLA in the house.
