Guwahati, April 26: In a heartwarming development, a differently-abled child in Assam has been reunited with her family nearly a year after she was discovered wandering alone, thanks to biometric data collected during her Aadhaar registration.
An official report revealed that the child was found by local residents at Dilli Ghat in Namrup, Dibrugarh district, on May 29, 2025.
The residents promptly took her to the local police station on the same day.
Subsequently, the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) in Dibrugarh referred her to the Mrinaljyoti Jyotiniwas Children Home for necessary care and protection.
Due to her intellectual disabilities, the girl was unable to communicate, prompting the superintendent of the children’s home to seek help from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) Regional Office in Guwahati to identify her and locate her family.
UIDAI officials recommended that her fingerprint biometrics be submitted during the Aadhaar enrolment process to facilitate matching with existing records.
Once her biometric data was captured, the Aadhaar system successfully identified her existing records, allowing authorities to trace her home address in Charaideo district.
With the Aadhaar information, officials managed to find her family and successfully reunited them at Borhat Tea Estate on Saturday.
