Assam Chief Minister Warns of Demographic Challenges Ahead of 2027 Census

Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has raised alarms about the potential demographic shifts that could emerge from the 2027 census, suggesting that a significant portion of the state's population may be of Bangladeshi descent. He has urged Hindu families in minority regions to consider having more children to counterbalance declining birth rates. Sarma's comments reflect broader concerns about social stability and the future demographic landscape of Assam, as he questions the political relevance of the Congress party in light of these trends. With assembly elections approaching, the BJP is preparing for strategic seat-sharing decisions.

Assam Chief Minister Warns of Demographic Challenges Ahead of 2027 Census

Concerns Over Population Trends in Assam

On January 8, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma issued a warning that the upcoming 2027 census could reveal "alarming disclosures" for the state. He suggested that nearly 40% of Assam's population might be of Bangladeshi origin. This statement followed his remarks on December 30 regarding population growth trends. In that address, he urged Hindu families residing in areas where they are minorities or on the verge of becoming minorities to consider having more than one child.

Sarma explained that this appeal aims to prevent demographic imbalances and ensure long-term social continuity in those regions.

Social Media and Media Address

Expressing his views on social media and later addressing the press, Sarma raised concerns about the uneven birth rates among different communities. He noted that in many parts of Assam, the birth rate among the Muslim population remains high, while the Hindu birth rate is gradually declining. According to the Chief Minister, if this trend continues unchecked, it could lead to serious long-term social and demographic consequences. He emphasized that this issue is not merely political but is also tied to the future social structure of certain areas.

Family Planning Recommendations

Sarma stated that in regions where the Hindu community has already become a minority or is on the brink of becoming one, families should not limit themselves to just one child. He further recommended that ideally, families should have at least two children, and if possible, three, framing this appeal as a matter of family continuity and social stability. Sarma also questioned the relevance of the Congress party in the state, asking, "Who among the local citizens, apart from illegal Bangladeshis, would vote for Congress?" He added that the opposition's grassroots presence is limited ahead of the assembly elections scheduled for March-April. The BJP is expected to finalize seat-sharing decisions by February 15.
