Resignation of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma

CM Sarma submitted his resignation at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Guwahati

Guwahati, May 6: In a significant political move, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma submitted his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Wednesday, paving the way for the establishment of a new government in Assam following the BJP-led NDA's overwhelming success in the recent Assembly elections.

Accompanied by his council of ministers, Sarma presented his resignation at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Guwahati and requested the Governor to dissolve the existing Assam Legislative Assembly.

After the meeting, Sarma informed the media, "I have handed over my resignation letter to the Assam Governor and requested him to dissolve the current Assam Legislative Assembly. The Governor has accepted both requests."

The Chief Minister noted that Governor Acharya has instructed the current ministers to remain in a caretaker capacity until the new chief minister and council of ministers are sworn in.

"During this interim phase, we will operate as a caretaker government. I express my gratitude to the Governor for his guidance over the past five years in managing the government," he remarked.

When asked about the next chief minister, Sarma indicated that decisions regarding the new cabinet, including the potential inclusion of new members, would be made following the BJP legislature party meeting.

"The legislature party meeting is anticipated to occur on May 10 or 11. The legislators will determine who will be the chief minister and the leader," he stated.

Sarma also mentioned that BJP president Jagat Prakash Nadda and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini have been designated as observers for the upcoming legislature party meeting.

He hinted that the swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place after May 11, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited to attend the event.

"There are indications that the oath-taking ceremony will occur after May 11. We have invited the Prime Minister to honor the event, especially since we have not only secured a century of seats but also achieved a hat-trick," Sarma added.

Earlier in the day, Assam's Chief Electoral Officer Anurag Goel presented the official results of the Assembly elections to Governor Acharya.

A team from the CEO’s office, led by Goel, visited the Governor at Lok Bhawan to submit the list of elected legislators.
