Postponement of Talks Announced

On Saturday, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that discussions scheduled between the government and representatives of the Karbi community have been postponed due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming two-day visit to the state. Sarma emphasized that this decision was made in light of the Prime Minister's significant visit to Assam and reassured the Karbi community that their concerns are a top priority for the government.


Rescheduling of Discussions

In his statement, Sarma expressed his commitment to the Karbi community, stating that their issues are important to the government. He assured them that the talks would be rescheduled promptly and that the government is dedicated to resolving all matters through sincere dialogue, mutual respect, and understanding.


Prime Minister's Upcoming Visit

Prime Minister Modi is set to be in Assam from January 17 to 18. During his visit, he will participate in a major cultural event celebrating Bodo heritage at the Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati. According to an official release from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), he will attend a grand cultural program titled "Bagurumba Dwo 2026," showcasing the traditions of the Bodo community. Over 10,000 artists will perform the Bagurumba dance, representing 81 assembly constituencies across 23 districts of Assam.


Cultural Significance of Bagurumba Dance

The Bagurumba dance is a traditional folk dance of the Bodo community, inspired by nature and symbolizing harmony between blooming flowers, human life, and the natural world. Traditionally performed by young women alongside male musicians, this dance features graceful and fluid movements mimicking butterflies, birds, leaves, and flowers. It holds deep cultural significance, representing peace, fertility, joy, and collective harmony, and is closely associated with festivals like Bodo New Year Bwisagu and Domasi.
