Assam Chief Minister Accuses Congress of Demographic Manipulation
Allegations of Demographic Changes in Assam
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has accused the Congress party of attempting to alter the demographic structure in key districts of Upper Assam. He criticized recent remarks suggesting a transformation of Sivasagar and Tinsukia into Dhubri. These comments were made by Rezaul Karim, the former president of the All Assam Minority Students' Union (AAMSU), who recently joined Congress. He claimed that such changes would benefit Assam's progress.
Immediate Backlash from Local Leaders
The remarks sparked immediate backlash, particularly in Upper Assam. Sivasagar is historically known as a stronghold of the Ahom community, while Dhubri is predominantly inhabited by Bengali Muslims. The government expressed concerns, stating, "We are living in fear," and emphasized their commitment to standing firmly with Gaurav Gogoi as a 'commander' to eliminate such worries by removing Himanta Biswa Sarma from Assam's political landscape. They asserted the need to protect Assam's society and culture, expressing confidence in uniting all communities to advance the state.
Sarma's Response to Congress Statements
In response, Chief Minister Sarma stated that these comments represent a blatant admission of the party's intentions to change the demographic makeup of significant districts. He accused Congress of promoting an agenda that threatens Assam's social and cultural fabric. Sarma highlighted that the statements made today from the Congress platform clearly indicate their intention to transform districts like Sivasagar and Tinsukia into 'Miya' territory.
Targeting Gaurav Gogoi
Sarma also directed his criticism towards Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, noting that he was present during the controversial statement. Sarma remarked that Gogoi should have opposed such claims at that moment.
